connecting to your inner core

I had the privilege of working with an individual whom I regard as the essence of spirituality. Every day they wake up they greet the day with such vibrancy, while I wake up in dread because of on-going aches and pains. While eating lunch I inquired, “do you ever wake up on the wrong side of the bed?” They sat and reflected on my question before answering me and then queried, “Is there a wrong side when you are one of the chosen to wake up?”

Now I was the one reflecting and at the same time dreading that I’d asked the question. So I decided to chuck the conversation until I “pondered” these two intertwined questions again.

I wrote these questions in my journal as I sat sipping on one of my favorite teas and staring aimlessly out the window.

Wrong side of the bed, is there a wrong side? I laughed because figuratively speaking many people feel like they wake up on the “wrong side of the bed”. But she had a point, is there really a wrong side? Why do we say we woke up on a “wrong side”? We say this because we are conditioned to see the negative in life and not the positive. In order to see the positive or (glass half full) we must connect to our core and refocus our attention on what is good about getting out of bed. As my friend questioned about there being a wrong side when you are one of the chosen to wake up, why would I complain?

I decided to try something different, I went to bed listening to something positive and decided to set my morning up for positivity by connecting to my inner core. What do I mean by that? I connected to the foundation of who I am and what enlightens my life. I focused on finding a message to listen to as I prepared myself for sleep. And when I awakened in the morning, I felt rejuvenated (spiritually) because I fed myself messages which enabled me to connect on a deeper level.

Nothing bothered me and I felt such peace after doing this for a week. By connecting to my inner core I began to see the glass “half full”, and by doing so looked at life and the events as they unfolded with a mindset similar to a term used in the clinical world called (Solution Focused Therapy or SFT). And while I was thinking about solutions, I was not weighing myself down with burden of having the solution in the present moment. Then it hit me, my “wrong side of the bed”.

I was preventing my mind from shutting down before bed, and as a result was not able to connect to my inner core. This affected me in many ways from inadequate sleep to poor physical sleep patterns. My mind was in Crisis Action Mode utilizing Solution Focus Brief Therapy (SFBT), in which I was draining the peace from my inner core thus causing me to wake up, “on the wrong side of the bed”.

Do you see yourself in this same cycle of patterns that will deplete you? Do you know how valuable it is to be in touch with your foundation and to incorporate daily check-ins to reconnect?

Ever since I made these small changes, I have noticed how less I say I got out of the bed on the wrong side. Because after all, if you are connected to the source (inner and outer) from a spiritual aspect then you know:

  1. waking up IS a blessing

  2. Aches and pains remind us we are alive

  3. Our focus should be on how to strengthen our inner core and relationship with our Creator

  4. Connecting with your inner core prevents you from focusing on “the world” and enables you to be grounded, calmer, and positive about life.

Start your routine on changing the narrative. You owe it to yourself to see the “glass half full”.
